Biden Administration Extends Ban on US Travel to North Korea
Do not travel to North Korea due to the continuing serious risk of arrest and long-term detention of US citizens.
The Biden administration has extended for one year a Trump-era ban on the use of US passports for travel to North Korea.
The ban was originally imposed in 2017 after the death of Otto Warmbier, a US college student who was detained in North Korea for 17 months and died shortly after his release. The ban was renewed in 2018 and 2019.
The State Department said in a statement that the ban is being extended "due to the continued serious risk of arrest and long-term detention of US citizens in North Korea." The statement said that the ban "is necessary to protect the safety and security of US citizens."
